Item numbers 1 through 1144 in auction 209
Item Description
6.25" tall painted composition bank in the shape of a baseball w/red paint accents to "Braves" name, raised stitches, "Jimmy" name on both sides and "The Variety Club" text within raised heart design. Faint incised text under "Jimmy" name reads "Children's Cancer Research." The Jimmy Fund was launched w/the help of the Variety Club of New England. The club organized a radio broadcast in 1948 from the bedside of a young cancer patient dubbed Jimmy as he was visited by members of the Boston Braves baseball team. Contributions poured in to buy Jimmy a television set so he could watch the Braves play. The relationship that the Red Sox and the Jimmy Fund share is the longest standing, most extensive, and significant team-charity relationship in all of professional sports, w/the Red Sox forming a partnership w/the Jimmy Fund on April 10, 1953, after the Braves left Boston, MA. for Milwaukee, WI. Ted Williams was the single most influential person in helping to raise funds for the Children's Cancer Research Foundation as Williams was the Red Sox's biggest star when the Jimmy Fund was founded in 1948. A Red Sox version of this bank was also produced. Bank shows wear mostly to base which show paint loss. Bank remains structurally sound and VG. Rare and first we've offered in our 47 years.
