Item Description
2-1/8x9.5" long silk woven ribbon has wonderful image of the Statue of Liberty at top center, flanked on either side of base by American and French flags. Text at top reads "La France A L'Amerique." Small name of statue designer Bartholdi at pedestal base. The Statue of Liberty (La Liberté Éclairant Le Monde in French) is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, designed by Frédéric Bartholdi and dedicated on Oct. 28, 1886. A gift to the United States from France, it depicts a robed female figure representing Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, who bears a torch and a tablet which has the date of the American Declaration of Independence - July 4, 1776 - inscribed upon it. The statue is an icon of freedom and of the United States and also welcomed immigrants arriving from abroad. First proposed in 1865, it wasn't until the 1870s that work began. Bartholdi completed the head and the torch-bearing arm before the statue was fully designed, and these pieces were exhibited for publicity at international expositions. One of these expositions was L'Exposition Universelle that was held in Paris in 1878, as noted/dated at the bottom of this ribbon. The torch-bearing arm was displayed at the Centennial Exposition in 1876 and in New York's Madison Square Park from 1876 to 1882. The statue's completion was marked by New York's first ticker-tape parade and a dedication ceremony presided over by President Grover Cleveland. Back top of ribbon bears ribbon-maker's name - B.B. Tilt & Sons of Paterson, NJ. Ribbon has lt. scattered aging/wear and is Fine/VF overall.
