Item Description
Lot of five vintage 8x10" NASA photos showing astronauts John Glenn, Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr., Donald "Deke" Slayton and Scott Carpenter in civilian attire. Walter "Wally" Schirra is seen in spacesuit. All were members of the Mercury Seven, a group of elite military test pilots selected by NASA to operate the experimental Mercury spacecraft and become the first American astronauts. First photo shows Glenn wearing lapel pin for the Mercury Seven program. Glenn was the first American to orbit the Earth and the third American in space. He has signed in black ink. Second photo shows Leroy Gordon Cooper, Jr. (1927-2004, also known as Gordon Cooper) also wearing Mercury Seven lapel pin. Signed in black ink. Schirra poses in front of spacecraft and has signed in black ink. Slayton poses in front of spacecraft and has signed in blue ink "Best Wishes To Debbie Grumbine - Donald K. Slayton." Last photo shows Carpenter also wearing Mercury Seven lapel pin. Signed in black felt tip pen. Photos have some scattered lt. wear/aging but remain Exc. overall. Signed photos come w/typed letter on "National Aeronautics And Space Administration letterhead and is dated July 10, 1962 and is addressed to same woman Slayton signed his photo for. Letter thanks young woman for writing and mentions enclosed Schirra and Cooper signed photos and instructs woman where to write to other astronauts. Letter is signed by Mildred Guice, "Secretary For Mercury Astronauts." Letter shows wear w/.25" tear at right margin and staining along top. Fine overall.
