Item Description
Full title is "Proceedings And Address Of The Vermont Republican Convention Friendly To The Election Of Andrew Jackson June 27, 1828." 5.5X9.25” 24 pages, in two signatures held by a cord. The first two “Resolved” statements on page one read “That The Talents, Integrity And Patriotism; The Arduous And Distinguished Public Service; And The Uniform Attachment To Democratic Principles Of Gen. Andrew Jackson, The Republican Candidate For The Presidency, Eminently Entitle Him To The Confidence And Support Of The People, And That We Will Use All Honorable Means To Ensure His Election.” And “Resolved, That We Repose Unshaken Confidence In The Ability And Patriotism Of John C. Calhoun, The Republican Candidate For Vice-President, And That We Will Give Him Our Cordial Support At The Ensuing Election.” On page four, “Address To The Republican Freemen Of Vermont” begins with several pages about the political climate and deals of the 1824 election and naming J.Q. Adams, Wm. Crawford, Henry Clay, Jackson and Webster. Text then says “Let Us For A Moment Turn Our Attention To The Republican Candidate, Gen. Andrew Jackson… Circumstances Have Materially Changed, And He Is Now The Only Candidate Against Mr. Adams. General Jackson Has Sprung From And Been Brought Up Among Common People.” Laudatory text follows including much that refutes “slander and detraction” as regards the six militia men supposedly wrongfully executed in 1812. The conclusion of the Address names Erza Meach, Chairman followed by the “Republican Electoral Ticket” naming seven men. The final six pages are an “Appendix.” Scattered wear with tan spots 1” and 2” on bottoms of pages 17-24 but they get smaller with each following page. Cover spotting but the paper is good quality and not at all brittle. Printed “Montpelier/Geo. W. Hill/Patriot Office/1828.”
