Item Description
3x5.25”. This paper shows snake-shaped ‘Steamer Copperhead” with Vallandigham standing in bow with Confederate flag attempting to land in “Richmond” and being rejected, apparently by (unidentified) Jeff Davis, with cartoon balloon “Go Away! You Can’t Land Here.” Vallandigham had been arrested May 5, 1863 for his opposition to the war, tried before a military commission, and convicted. On May 19, 1863 Lincoln ordered him to be deported to the Confederacy. He then went to Richmond and via blockade runner to Bermuda and then to Canada where he declared himself a candidate for Governor of his home state of Ohio, winning the Democratic nomination in absentia, and running his campaign from a Windsor, Ontario hotel. He lost in a landslide. Text on the left end of the card reads: “Right Off For Salt River! By Way Of Delaware Bay!/The K.G.S. Steamer Copperhead, Capt. Charles Brown (Tinder Box), Master. The T.B. Captain Having Ordered Off From Richmond By The Ungrateful Jeff. Davis Will Proceed To Salt River By The Route Named. Fare $190.” Two barely visible creases NM.
