Item Description
1" sepia without dot pattern has light age on W&H paper and front of the button has tan tone at the upper left edge. Over 90% of the button remains clean and the piece has full gloss. Full text is "Ettor & Giovannitti/I.W.W./Their Only Crime Is Loyalty To The Working Class." As leading figures in Socialist movement both men went to Lawrence, Massachusetts where a textile strike was in progress. The walk-out came to be known at the Bread And Roses strike. One of the IWW strikers was shot and killed. Joseph Caruso was charged with the murder and Ettor and Giovannitti were both arrested as accomplices although at the time of the crime they were both giving speeches several miles away. Eventually all three were acquitted. One of the few vintage buttons to carry the famous "I.W.W." initials. Scarce.
