Item Description
First is 1.25" reading "Hands Off Lenny Bruce." This button was produced as a proof prior to the actual production run. From circa April, 1964 after his arrest following performances at Cafe Au Go Go. Second 1.25" reads "Cafe Au Go Go." This club was located in the basement of 152 Bleecker Street, New York City. In April 1964 comedian Lenny Bruce was arrested there on obscenity charges along with the owner Howard Solomon. Also in 1964 Solomon hired a large group of singers and musicians and named them the "Au Go Go Singers" to rival the Bitter End Singers across the street at the Bitter End Cafe. Also at the Cafe a new folk/rock group The Company was formed. Stephen Stills was one of the group members, and when the company went on a tour of Canada, Stills met Neil Young. The club was also the first New York venue for the Grateful Dead. Richie Havens and the Blues Project were weekly regulars. Other famous musicians who appeared there include Van Morrison, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, The Youngbloods, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Jefferson Airplane and Cream. This button is from the early years of the club c.1964-1965. Mint as made and one just a couple found in the Levin Collection. Both items are from the Levin Collection and come with Hake's COA.
