Auction #209 - Part II
Item numbers 1145 through 2874 in auction 209
Item Description
These are among the very earliest litho tin buttons ever produced in quantity. They are c.1912 and each is 1.25". This is a remarkable high grade collection of 43 different of the 50 that are known. Each has a blue reverse reading "Factory No. 30, 2nd District New York." Both Hassan and Sweet Caporal Cigarettes have been identified with this factory but we do not know which cigarette brand issued these with their cigarette packages. A few do not carry any cartoonist name but vast majority do and there are many by "Fisher" featuring his characters Mutt & Jeff, many done by "TAD" (Thomas Dorgan), and many by Rube Goldberg. About a dozen have a few pinpoint dots of missing paint but even these are high grade compared to the average example from this series which tends to have very darkened paint. These are all exceedingly bright and clean. The most advanced collection of these we have ever seen.
