Item Description
c. 1945. 10x12” sheet of animation paper has 8.75x11.75” lead and blue pencil image area drawn by Tom Oreb. He’s looking over Dali’s shoulder watching him paint scene w/tree coming out of bust of woman in box w/lobster in foreground. Tree limb has pocket watch on it. Caption above Oreb’s head reads “ Salv-This ‘Dalinian Paranoiac Method’ Sets My Screws”. Dali is sitting on a foot shaped chair resting in large flying pan w/eyeball nearby on floor. Hand is pulling on curtain at right. The Disney studio was working on a project titled “Destino” based on Dali’s art at this time. The film was finally released in 2003. Sheet has dust soil and lt. creasing as stored. Image area is Fine. Tom Oreb (1913-1987) animated at Disney from 1937 to 1961, notably in Ward Kimball’s unit. Credits include “Pinocchio; Sleeping Beauty; Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom; 101 Dalmatians”. He did the art for the “Once Upon A Wintertime” Golden Book (based on a segment from “Melody Time”) and went on to do early animated TV commercials, worked w/Tex Avery on “Symphony In Slang”, UPA, and the “Dick Tracy Show” in 1961. Well drawn and funny. This is the last of two such Dali pieces Oreb drew, the other sold in our last auction for $537.
