Item Description
Last auction we offered a lot of 86 photos for the 1909 team and this sold for $5,566. Many of the same players were also on the 1910 team, but the line-ups were not identical. In this lot are three of Hal Chase (no Chase photos were in the previous lot). Chase, whose big league career lasted from 1905 to 1919, was the most notoriously corrupt player in baseball history. He was also, according to many of those who saw him play, the greatest defensive first baseman ever but his tainted legacy has kept him out of the Hall Of Fame. Other players in this lot include Jack Quinn who had 23 seasons in the majors, Jack Doyle who was the first pinch hitter and had 17 National League seasons, Frank Laporte who led Federal League w/107 RBI’s in 1914. Each is 5x7” original glossy w/”Spooner & Wells, Inc. Photographers” ink stamp on back w/NYC address and player's name added in pencil. Nearly all show players in uniform, some candid poses but most are action shots and/or practice game images. Moderate scattered wear/aging but all reaming glossy and overall lot is Fine. Originally one of the AL's eight charter franchises, the club was founded in Baltimore in 1901 as the Baltimore Orioles. The team moved to New York City in 1903 and became the New York Highlanders and took the "Yankees" as their official name in 1913. An historic and impressive instant collection.
