Item Description
Original over-sized 17x31" paper envelope w/self-portrait by American graphic artist, designer, illustrator and painter Byrd (who holds his own head on a tray), best known for his posters for Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, Traffic, and The Grateful Dead as well as creating the original poster for the legendary Woodstock Festival. Offered here is a complete set of four 14x22" window cards that have each been hand-signed by Byrd in black felt tip (on three) and purple marker (on one), w/the artist adding 1971 date. Created for the Triton Gallery in 1971, posters feature Byrd's art, incorporating a head in the main poster design. These include titles - "Soon: A Rock Opera" which features a very psychedelic design; poster for "Frank Merriwell: Or Honor Challenged" musical w/Victorian man; poster for "The Survial Of St. Joan" musical featuring a skull and psychedelic face split by a cross; and poster for "Godspell" musical. Posters have been shrink-wrapped but are not mounted and can be easily removed. All are Exc./NM. Envelope has hand-colored "Heads" title and has also been hand-signed by Byrd in black felt tip pen. Envelope has many small margin tears w/some having archival tape repairs. Most of these would mat out is so desired for a Fine display.
