Item Description
Bob Hoffman, founder of York Barbell and Strength and Health Magazine, donated woodland in York County, Pa. to be named the Richard M. Nixon county park. Nixon visited several times, usually for events that involved his friend and York newsman Harry McLaughlin. These items are from the McLaughlin Collection and the first two come with JSA letters of authenticity. The items span several years but in photo order: most are from Nixon visit 8/23/88 for 20th anniversary of the park. A) 6x10" glossy signed "Richard Nixon" and taken at county Thomasville airport 8/23/88. Some very tiny smudges as signed but otherwise Mint. B) Earlier Nixon signed letter dated 4/28/77 thanking McLaughlin, mentioning a Nixon park contribution check, and "Final Editing Of My Forthcoming Book." Signed "Richard Nixon." Two folds as issued. Small marks on blank reverse, front displays Mint. Includes envelope. C) One of 21 photos 3.5x5" with McLaughlin showing Nixon the park name plaque. Of the 21 photos, 17 are nice sharp photos that show Nixon. D) Nixon with park Naturalist on wooded trail 8x10" photo. E) Julie Eisenhower 4.5x6" handwritten thank you to McLaughlin 9/5/88 for photo he sent of Nixon's Aug. 1988 park visit. F) Julie Nixon Eisenhower signed (c.1991) 1952 photo of her with McLaughlin's daughter and other children at farm home of Nixon's parents. McLaughlin added extensive captions on reverse. Four tape stains on back but front is clean. Un-pictured items include A) Longsheet "Nixon Visit Schedule" 8/23/88. B) Nixon visit guest list (three pages). C) Photocopy park register with Nixon entry 8/23/88. D) Pa. Congressmen Goodling signed "Bill" thank you letter to McLaughlin for day at park. E) 1987 Letter from John Taylor on Office Of Richard Nixon stationary saying "The Boss" was surprised the 20th anniversary was only a year away and saying a 1988 visit will happen. It did. Comes with Hake's COA and two JSA LOA.
