Auction #210 - Part I
Item numbers 1 through 1270 in auction 210
Item Description
This was a copper Indian head penny, although no details remain, that was laid on the train track in York, Pa. when McKinley's funeral train passed through the town. The 1-1/8" thin copper has been neatly holed at the top with a brass ring inserted. Hand engraved on one side is the inscription "McKinley/Sept. 14/1901." Engraved on the opposite side are the initials "GES." Each surface has a very thin coat of shellac and the result is a very glossy appearance. We've had a couple of these flattened pennies from this 1901 event in our home town but none so definitively documented with beautiful engravings.
