c. late 1930s. 13x16” high quality wood frame has double archival mat revealing 7.5x10.5” image area in India ink and watercolor w/some lead pencil under drawing on paper sheet. Scene has full figure frightened looking Flagg coming face to face w/himself as horned devil w/tail and cloven feet. Bottom has hand lettered ink caption “I Meet My Reputation! Tsk! Tsk! Yours Monty”. Sheet has lt. rippling from watercolor, a few lt. folds as mailed. Fine/VF w/bright color and great pen work. Frame is Exc. Flagg (1877-1960) was one of the top illustrators of the first half of the 20th century, gaining great fame in WWI for his “I Want You” Uncle Sam poster. He also had a reputation as a ladies man and party goer, which obviously inspired this original. Ready for display.
