Item Description
11x30" thin art board strip has 5 India ink panels by creator Bud Fisher. Mutt & Jeff are running for president and see campaign buttons with their portraits on passersby. They decide to see who is the more popular candidate based on how many buttons they see. Second and third panel show men walking by with Jeff buttons, 4th panel shows stereotypical Chinaman wearing Mutt button, which Jeff finds humorous. Strip ends with Jeff on the ground, stars over his head, his hat broken over his head by Mutt and text "For A Guy Who Aspires To Become President I'll Say Your Conduct Is Very Passé!" Last panel is signed in ink by Fisher. Fourth panel has 1923 H.C. Fisher copyright. Margin above strip art has pencil notation reading "Mutt & Jeff - The Mutt & Jeff Campaign Buttons Are More Or Less In Evidence. Looks Like Mutt Has Chinese Vote Sewed Up - But They Can't Vote In The U.S. By Bud Fisher” in Fisher's hand. Notation at bottom indicates strip ran Dec. 17, 1923. Scattered aging/dust soiling along margins w/1.5" tear at bottom edge, image area will mat and frame to VF/ Exc. appearance. A superior example.
