Item Description
Incredible original glossy photo professionally framed to 9x34". A total of 152 people are shown including officers and camp members. Aside from a handful of Caucasian officers and a few other men (seated front center), all remaining people are African-American and predominately youth. At top left is banner reading "Champions CCC Field Day" for Civilian Conservation Corps, an FDR initiated program to provide employment for the vast numbers of unemployed youth during the depression. At top center two boys hold an American flag. At top right two boys hold a pennant reading "Northern Area Baseball Champions" w/date obscured by 1939. At lower right is the black baseball team in uniforms. Their jersey's read "State Camp 76" which was located in Renovo, PA. Faint printed text on the photo at bottom margin includes this information as well as a date of Sept. 1940 and lists Lieutenant names and "Co. 1330 CCC." Photographer's mark is at lower left "Williams Foto Service." Scattered margin wear w/some ft. creases and small tears but as framed this is mostly only visible when viewed closely or in reflected light. Image remains clean, glossy, sharp and distinct. Overall VG but displays VF as framed. An interesting panoramic w/lots of charm and character. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
