Item Description
Vintage mat contains 12x15.5" artboard w/original ink and watercolor art depicting stylized image of Gwen Verdon as a devil in a New York Yankees baseball uniform, swinging a pitchfork instead of a bat. This is for the original 1955 Broadway production of the "Damn Yankees" musical comedy, a modern retelling of the Faust legend set during the 1950s in Washington, DC during a time when the Yankees dominated Major League Baseball. The musical is based on Wallop's novel "The Year The Yankees Lost The Pennant." The original production starred Verdon (who also starred in the 1958 film adaptation) as Lola. In addition to the musical's hand-lettered title, sign features "Starring Gwen Verdon" hand-lettered text as well as "46th St. Theatre W. 46th St." hand-lettered address, for the theater where the show had its debut. Mat has penciled "Cusick" name at lower right, possibly the artist's. Mat shows moderate wear w/large pinhole at top center, staples at top and bottom margin and 2.25" tear at bottom right. Original art has some lt. aging but remains clean for the most part and Exc. Would look great if re-matted and framed. Unique.
