Item Description
In an experimental endeavor, Pennsylvania's Carlisle Indian Industrial school attempted to assimilate Native American students to "American" culture. While not w/o controversy, the short-lived institution did realize overwhelming success, in featuring track and field phenomena Jim Thorpe on their football team. In 1911 Carlisle had an 11-1 record w/Thorpe at left halfback, their season highlighted by a stunning 18-15 upset of Ivy League juggernaut Harvard on Nov. 11. Offered here is a 5-5/8x8.5" gameday program from that historic contest — in which Thorpe accounted for all of Carlisle's points. The program is thick stock, w/two-page scorecard featuring a photo image of man in Indian attire on the front, along w/the date and "Harvard" and "Carlisle" names. Inside, the players are listed by name and position, and a scoring grid is marked in pencil to reveal the 18-15 outcome. Additional small ink notation below scoring section. The back page lists updated football rules. Pinch crease to spine w/some handling wear, corner tip wear and lt. even aging. Fine overall. Rare.
