Item Description
Lot of ten of the first window posters used to promote the ground-breaking little magazine "M'lle New York" 1895-1896. The 1890s saw the advent of the little magazine, a new form associated w/the emerging modern art movements and more enlightened social and cultural trends. Examples included - "Bradley His Book, Lark, Chap-book, Bibelot, Philistine, Echo" and "M'lle New York," which was published "Fortnightly." First issue names Vance Thompson as editor (later James Huneker) w/artists Thomas Fleming and T.E. Powers. Fleming is named on six, Powers on one, Clio Vinton Neneker on one and two are w/o artist credit. These ten posters embody movements and themes including - Arts & Crafts, Art Nouveau, Decadence, Symbolism, Progressive Era cultural thought and the international poster revolution. The first nine posters are on paper while last is cardstock. This appears to be a second version to promote the publication's debut on Aug. 1, 1895. Most posters have a pencil notation at upper left, we will note these and list them in date order (excluding the last) along w/brief description and condition notes. "Aug 1/95 No 1" measures 12.5x19" and features full figure woman by Fleming. "Aug 11/95" measures 12x17" and features woman w/fan by Fleming. "Sept 1/95 No 3" measures 13x16" and features woman w/pearl necklace holding dollar sign pendant and dog wearing crown and smoking by Fleming. 1/8" corner tear. "Sept 15/95 No 4" measures 12x19" and features woman dancing w/harlequin by Powers. Three very faint horizontal folds and small .25x3.5" long moisture streak at bottom right. "Oct 1/95 No 5" measures 8.5x19.25" and features nude woman in outdoor scene by Fleming. Four diagonal scuff lines measuring between 4" and 9" long, removing some brown color from figure. Horizontal fold. "Oct 15/95 No 6" measures 10.75x12.25" and features image of devilish woman w/tail about her head and sharp nails by Vinton Nuneker. Ninth poster has no pencil notations and was likely for November issues 7 or 8. Features portrait and text "A New Story By Edward W. Townsend - Author Of 'Chimmie Fadden'." This was his 1895 fictional book/play about Bowery Boy stories. "Dec 1/95 No 9" measures 12x20" and features smiling devil face and tentacles spelling out magazine title by Fleming. Tiny creasing and 1/8" tear on left edge and 1/8" corner tip off bottom right. "Jan 1/96 No 10" measures 13x17" and features diverse group of people by Fleming. Bottom right has 2" tear w/archival tape repair on reverse. 12x18.5" cardstock poster appears top have "Aug/95 No 1" notation and seems to be a second design for the premier of the magazine. Poster features woman reading by candlelight w/cat by her feet. No artist name. Reverse has quick sketch of man. Posters are Fine/NM overall w/exceptions as noted.
