Item Description
Pair of 10.5x16-3/8" thin artboards (slight trim at top margin of first sheet) featuring original pen and ink art by legendary comic book artist Jack "King" Kirby for the Jan. 1969 issue of "Captain America" #109 published by Marvel Comics. The issue's story "The Hero That Was!" was written by Stan Lee w/art by Kirby and inks by Syd Shores. First page has four panels and second page features five panels. Art is for pages 18-19 of this issue and depicts the scrawny Steve Rogers entering Dr. Erskine's laboratory in first two panels, the secret German agent planning to shoot Erskine in third panel and Rogers and Erskine entering laboratory before government spectators. Second page features Rogers being bombarded w/Vita-Rays, showing the scrawny Rogers growing in size and muscle, being revealed w/the impressive physique he would use as Captain America in last panel. This process features wonderful use of Kirby's popular Kirby Krackle/Kirby Dots effect. Top margin of each sheet has been stamped w/"Captain America" title and handwritten "109" issue number. Second sheet has "Continued After Next Page" paste-over at bottom right, but o/w all art is original. Sheets have various penciled notations on margins. First sheet has some scattered moisture staining at center left and right margins, though this mostly limited to margin areas, not affecting actual art too much. Fine/VF. Second sheet remains clean and displays bold, clean and Exc. This original art was featured in "Faster Than A Speeding Bullet - The Art Of The Superhero" publication issued by the Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art for a exhibition at the University of Oregon Sept. 26, 2009 to Jan. 3, 2010 and comes w/a reading copy. We are thrilled to be able to offer these stunning pieces of original art that feature the origin of one of Marvel Comics' greatest heroes by a legendary comic book artist to the collecting community.
