Item Description
Lot of four books, including three first edition hardcovers (w/dust jackets) and one softcover first edition. All feature Derleth's Sherlock Holmes-like detective character Solar Pons. "The Return Of Solar Pons" which was published by Arkham House imprint Mycroft & Moran in 1958. The front endpapers have been signed by Derleth in purple ink, who has added "Canonically" inscription. Derleth is best remembered as the first publisher of the writings of HP Lovecraft, and for his own contributions to the Cthulhu mythos genre of horror, as well as his founding of the publisher Arkham House (which did much to bring supernatural fiction into print in the US that had previously only been available in the UK). Derleth was a leading American regional writer of his day, as well as prolific in several other genres, including historical fiction, poetry, detective fiction, science fiction, and biography. Only 2,000 copies were published. DJ shows wear w/tears/chips at top and bottom of spine, most prevalent at top. VG/Fine. Book itself has some scattered age spotting to endpapers. Inscription/signature remains distinct. Rest of pages are Exc. The other hardcovers in this lot include "Mr. Fairlie's Final Journey" (1968) and "The Chronicles of Solar Pons" (1973), each w/DJ art by Frank Utpatel. DJs have some scattered aging/lt. wear and are complete and VF/Exc. Books are Exc. Softcover "The Adventures Of The Unique Dickensians" was published in 1968 by Mycroft & Moran. Front cover has 1" crease at upper corner but is o/w VF. Comes with Hake's COA.
