Item Description
Large and rare 3.5" combination real photo and artwork celluloid used for event "Chicago/Oct. 18 And 19. 1898." Captioned at top "Who Did It?" and picturing Dewey, Roosevelt, Schley, McKinley and one man unknown to us. Beneath McKinley is the text "We Did." At bottom left and right are a pair of small illustrated scenes each with a touch of pink tint. Left shows warship firing on the Spanish with text "Manila May 1st 1898/Santiago July 3rd 98." The scene at right shows figure representing Theodore Roosevelt standing upright with raised American flag in one hand and saber in the other as he urges on his troops who are attacking the Spanish. Captioned below "Santiago July 17th 1898." Reverse has concave metal back with pair of small openings at the top where a large pin was once fastened. Celluloid has .25" split on the back but laying flat. Front of the piece, while extremely clean, does have some scratching in reflected light. Most noticeably a hairline outlining the man we can't identify at the center right. Left edge has just the slightest hint of tan tone but there are no distracting dark stain spots. In addition to the quite numerous surface scratches, there is a tiny mark above the Manila scene that would qualify as a 1/8" craze line. In spite of the age and damage the piece still displays extremely Fine and with high gloss. Unlisted in Hake and, although the image is small, a rare depiction of TR attacking Kettle Hill and/or San Juan Hill. Rare.
