Item Description
1.5", unlisted in Hake, and with a blank back paper. Suspended from the collet is a 3" ribbon accented by gold stars and gold text "Roosevelt And Fairbanks 1905." Slight loss of gold from the word "And" and the fabric has three tiny pinholes barely showing. The celluloid has slightest trace of 1/16" gray mark below the elephant's raised foot which is exceedingly minor and the piece is otherwise Essentially Mint as made. This 1905 inaugural souvenir button stands out because it appears to represent the first time both symbols, in cartoon form, appear on a single political device designed to be worn. While the symbols date to the 1870s and saw great use in cartoons during the 1880s, their use on objects to be worn evolved slowly. The earliest elephant known to us appears on Hake Harrison #3212. The first to combine a donkey and elephant is an embossed brass stickpin from McKinley's 1896 or 1900 campaign (Hake #227) featuring a realistic non-cartoon elephant with "G.O.P." on its side and its trunk around the mid-section of a dangling donkey. We believe this 1905 cartoon of a victorious dancing G.O.P. elephant dangling by the tail the diminutive dead donkey with its tongue extended appears to be the first to display both symbols on a single pin back button. Only example known to us.
