Item Description
1.25" with curl reading "Geraghty & Co. Chi.". Pictured is Ohio Republican Senator Joseph Foraker and button was apparently issued for this 1908 Presidential nomination hopeful attempt. No back paper as issued but with union bug stamped on the lightly oxidized metal back. Front has light scratch by his nose with a deeper .5" scratch across his cheek going to the right. Below is a third but very light 5/8" scratch. The deeper mark shows under most viewing conditions but the rest of the piece displays bright and clean. "Brownsville" refers to 1906 Texas event in which black soldiers of the 25th United States Infantry were accused of rioting and subsequently court martialed. Many, including Foraker who had a passion for racial justice, wanted further investigation and he got his Brownsville resolution passed in the Senate. Part of his goal was to discredit TR and Taft and to use the issue to acquire the 1908 Presidential nomination. For a history of the event, see "Theodore Rex" by Edmund Morris. A rare and important civil rights button.
