Item Description
1.25" with W&H paper plus spring pin holding 2" fabric flag ribbon. Button reads "The Newsboys' Friend." Pictured is John E. Gunckel. As a railroad employee he saw the plight of often homeless newsboys in the Toledo area and founded the Toledo Newsboys Association to improve their situation. The group went national at the St. Louis Exposition 1904 and 1905 he published the book "Boyville" which led to his national reputation and the founding of the National Newsboys' Association. The group, later in the 1940s, transitioned in to Boy's Club, with girls added later. This piece is c.1905 and NM displaying Mint. Also see newsboy trip to FDR inauguration button #333.
