Item Description
First is 1888 N332 S.F. Hess "Athletes And Celebrities - Boxing" card that has been graded SGC 40 VG 3. The boxer featured on the card, Danny Needham ("The St. Paul Terror"), is most famous for his 76-round fight w/Tommy Ryan. During his career, Needham was Lightweight Champion of the Northwest. He was at his best from Dec., 1886 until Oct., 1889, losing only one fight. Card measures 2.75x1.5" and is in a much higher grade than typical examples. Desirable card from a desirable series, Hess's only to feature boxers. Second card is 1890 Mayo's Cut Plug N310 "Prizefighters" card that has been graded SGC 40 VG 3. The boxer featured on the card, Young Griffo, turned pro in 1886 and fought primarily in his home land of Australia. He held the Australian Featherweight Title for many years, challenging Torpedo Billy Murphy for the World Featherweight Title in 1890, winning in the 15th round after Murphy retired. He defended the title four times before vacating it to fight at a higher weight. Card measures 2-7/8x1-5/8" and has a blank back w/no number from a set believed to consist of around 22 cards. A better than average grade on a card from a highly sought after set, one of the rarer pre-1900 sets.
