3.5x6" chromolithogrpahed trade card for the Van Amburgh, Charles Reich & Brothers's New Railroad Shows, a part of the "New Van Amburgh Shows, American And Japanese Circus, Museum, Aquarium And Managerie." c. 1885. Front shows scene of two European explorers directing a team of four native men as one carries baby Wooly Mammoth and other pulls rope tied around foot of so-called Wooly Mammoth adult specimen. Printed text on reverse provides further details on the beast - "Is Not An Elephant, But A Descendant Of The Prehistoric Monsters Or Mammoths That Were Contemporaneous With The Ichthyosaurus And Pterodactyl. The Animal Was Captured In The Malay Mountains By The Agents Of Charles Reiche & Bro. And Has Awakened Deep Interest In The Minds Of Students, Scientists, And Savans, And Received The Endorsement Of The Metropolitan Press And Learned Men Everywhere As The Rarest Animal Ever Exhibited." Admission is noted as being 25¢. Card has moderate handling wear w/creases visible on reverse though from front it still displays Fine. Scarce.
