Item Description
Case is 3-1/8x3-11/16" with original anchor and suspension loop (slightly less than a perfect circle) for wall display. Reverse black paper has five white small stress marks and tiny wear on each corner tip. Brass mat has small tarnish marks with stamped inscription at bottom right. First numeral is faint but text appears to be "Holmes/289 Broadway." Ambrotype glass reverse has original backing paper, glossy black toward the image and tan on opposite side. There is detail loss around his shoulder at left, scattered dots to left and lower right of his image and some silvering of his suit lapels near the bottom of the oval. There is what seems to be a hair in the reverse emulsion that makes a gray or silvery hairline from the left corner of his mouth down to his coat lapel. An example without age realized $2,151.00 in a Heritage 2007 auction. Julie Powell Collection.
