Item Description
19x23.75” mat has 13-3/8x17-5/8” opening w/India ink art and litho crayon shading showing startled burglar dropping his sack when he sees “Scarlet Fever” notice on doorway. Art is signed in ink at lower left “ R. Van Buren + A.C.” Mat has caption “Gosh Its Lucky I Seen That. I’d Hate To Have My Kids Katch It”. Top has “Kansas City Star” text. Reverse of art board has ink date “Oct. 3 1914”. Image area has trace of lt. dust soil and minor aging. Fine/VF. Raeburn Van Buren (1891-1987) was a founder of the National Society of Magazine Illustrators and began drawing “Abbie An’ Slats” in 1937 after being recruited by Al Capp and continued the strip until his retirement in 1971. Historic early humorous example.
