Item Description
1-5/16" very thin planchet, missing the reverse shank. The front has "GW" initials at center surrounded by "Long Live The President." Surrounding this are 13 ovals enclosing the initials of the original 13 states. The die strike on the front is exceptionally sharp with the indents forming the ovals completely individual and not bleeding together as occurred later once the dies became worn. Because of the fresh dies and the thin planchet, the front details are extensively mirrored on the reverse. The term used to denote this is a "Flash Reverse." The oval links and nearly all individual letters can be discerned on the reverse, although, of course positioned backwards compared to the front. While tarnished over 200+ years, the button has nice reflective brass highlights on the front. Hake #3005. Julie Powell Collection.
