Item Description
1-3/8" tall with about 50% of the silver luster over brass still remaining. Reverse has solder holding what seems to be original vertical brass pin. The group grew out of an 1870 story written by Hale titled "Ten Times One Is Ten." The story tells of ten people who meet at the funeral of a mutual friend and discover he had financially helped each of them. They resolved to follow his example and help their neighbors calculating that if each person who lent someone else a hand the spirit of charity and giving would rapidly multiply. After the story was published groups sprang up voluntarily to follow the example. The group was based on four mottoes that were included in the story and which appear on this badge in quotation marks and reading "Look Up, And Not Down, Look Out And Not In, Look Forward And Not Back, And Lend A Hand." The original organization was named "Ten Times One Corporation" in 1892 but the name was then changed to "Lend A Hand Society" in 1898. Back of the piece has numerous hairline scratches flanking the pin. Only example we have seen in five decades.
