Item Description
.25” button with slightly dusty back paper of maker Keystone Badge, Reading, Pa. James Maurer was a prominent American trade unionist from Reading, Pa. who twice ran for Vice-President with Norman Thomas heading the Socialist Party ticket in 1928 and 1932. He also ran for Governor of Pennsylvania twice and once for Pennsylvania Senator. He was also elected as a Socialist to the Reading, Pa. City Council in 1927. This button is from earlier in this career. In 1912, he was elected President of the Pennsylvania Federation of Labor, a post he held until 1930. This button, issued by his organization, reads “Remember The Compensation Act” and pictures a black crow symbolizing then State Senator William E. Crow who was up for re-election in 1914. In 1911, the Pennsylvania legislature established a commission to make recommendations that would lead to a workers’ compensation act and set limits on labor by women and children. Crow voted against these labor friendly bills and Maurer’s organization attempted to block his 1914 re-election, coming close, but failing. Crow went on to become U.S. Senator, replacing Philander Knox who died in office, as did Crow in 1922. Excellent and displays Mint. One seen.
