Item Description
Two smaller are 1-1/8" lithos while the two larger are 1.25" cellos. All are from the Marshall Levin Collection. First has his hand inked paper on the reverse reading "Cartoon In East Village Other/1967." Front pictures "Sunshine Girl." This underground newspaper published in NYC during the 1960s was described by New York Times as "New York newspaper so countercultural that it made The Village Voice look like a church circular." It included outrageous comic strips including the saga of Captain High, the psychedelic adventures of the character on this button Sunshine Girl, and Zoro Aster the Mad Mouse. This is the only example of this button we have seen and it is Mint. Comes along with late 1960s button from East Village underground store titled Underground Uplift Unlimited with their trademark and address on the curl and the front text reading "Hands Off Tim Leary." Other two buttons in this lot were issued to promote an eight part series which debuted on New York television, 1971. Levin's ink note on the back of the first reads "Turned On Crisis/N.E.T./Ch. 13, NYC/1971." Second button with identical design but a slightly different color has Levin's grease pencil note on back of button used to promote the program in a different city with his text reading "Pittsb./NET/'71." This has a couple of pinpoint rubs as does the previous but the two celluloids display Mint as issued and these last two are VF and scarce. Comes with Hake's COA.
