Item Description
2.75 X 5-3/8” paper in Excellent condition excepting only 5 circular .5” marks on blank reverse from a mounting long ago. Inscribed boldly in black ink: “Yours/For equal civil and political rights. Belva A. Lockwood/Dec. 22, 1884.” Lockwood was an attorney, educator, author and actively worked for women’s rights with the press of her era terming her a “suffragist.” In 1884, she was the nominee of the National Equal Rights Party and is credited as the first woman to appear on official ballots. The note is dated less than two months after the 1884 election. While not comparable, but interesting, we discovered the 2011 auction sale of a letter she wrote in 1906 in which she detailed her 1884 presidential run that realized $4780.00. Historic and unique with a very bold inscription that displays beautifully. Comes with Hake’s COA and JSA LOA.
