Item Description
10" long hand-painted tin warplane w/13" wide wingspan. Plane has "U.S Army" name on underside of wings along w/Army stars. Fuselage and tailfin are both marked "35," a reference to the Seversky P-35 fighter aircraft built in the US by the Seversky Aircraft Company in the late 1930s. A contemporary of the Hawker Hurricane and Messerschmitt Bf 109, the P-35 was the first single-seat fighter in US Army Air Corps to feature all-metal construction, retractable landing gear and an enclosed cockpit. In addition to pilot that has been hand-painted in cockpit, lines and dots indicating metal sheets and rivets have all been hand-painted w/remarkable detail. Side of plane features Indian chief set against arrowhead design. This plane was produced by Marx, but in a different variation. Toy has original "Sample - Louis Marx & Co." string tag w/"P-35" hand-inked text and inventory/stock number. Tag has Glendale, WV. plant name at bottom. Missing propeller. Plane shows obvious wear w/paint scratches/flakes w/oxidation to visible bare metal. Left wing has 1" dent on top. Metal loop on top, just behind cockpit. VG overall.
