Item Description
The 1789 clothing button featuring the 'Linked States' design, circular motto "Long Live The President" and center displaying "GW" initials was an ideal choice 100 years later in 1889 when it was time to inaugurate President Benjamin Harrison and also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the inauguration of our first president George Washington. This commemorative is cataloged in Albert's book on uniform and historical buttons as "CM". The button was struck by the famous British firm J.R. Gaunt & Sons of Birmingham and London. Compared to the 1789 original, all inscriptions are incised (none raised), the size is 1.25" (33mm, not 34mm) and rather than a very thin planchet this is a substantial 2mm thick. The front has a beautiful bronze tone and the reverse has a rainbow patina surrounding the shank. While the value is not comparable, we've seen only this single example of the 1889 commemorative by Gaunt whereas we've probably seen 20 examples of the 1789 original. NM and displaying Mint. Don & Mildred Wright Collection.
