Item Description
These ferrotypes with thick brass shell hollow rims were made for all four candidates in 1860 in the four sizes of 25mm, 30mm, 38mm and this majestic 47mm size. If the original brass wire loop on this piece is included the overall size is 54mm (or 2-1/16"). The 'doughnut' shaped frame is a full 5/16" thick. DeWitt catalogs this size as AL1860-77 but has no photo example. Neither is there an example of this largest size in Hake. The two examples of this size in the 2013 historic auction of the Ford Collection by Stacks Bowers both displayed the Lincoln portrait designated by DeWitt as #3. Both were missing the top loop. The one otherwise undamaged example realized $11,750.00. The example offered here features what DeWitt designated as Lincoln portrait #1. The one other example we've found with Portrait #1 was in a 2010 auction. It was also missing the loop and had "1860" scratched in the emulsion above each image. On the example offered here, as often typical, most of the thin sliver flashing has evaporated from the flower covered frame. There is a tiny 1/16" hairline mark on Lincoln's right eye. There is a 3/16" on and off hairline scratch across his forehead. However, by any standard the emulsion on the Lincoln side is Extremely Fine. The Hamlin side has more wear. There is an inverted "T" shaped scratch on his forehead, tiny loss from his right eye, a section of tonal detail gone from his lower left of the mouth and jaw and similar tonal loss from his hair. Along the extreme lower edge at 4 o'clock is a missing 3/16" narrow sliver of emulsion. Overall, we grade the Hamlin side as VG. One of the very few doughnut examples of any size to retain its original wire loop plus the impressiveness of this largest size format and the rarity of this Lincoln portrait image combines to make this an outstanding rarity.
