Item Description
Pair of 15x20" Smithsonian Institution prints, each featuring 2x2" section of original fabric from two historic aircraft, mounted above text detailing the aircraft. 20.5x26.5" frame contains print that has been professionally double-matted and framed. Print shows line of three of the five produced "Douglas World Cruiser" aircraft developed to meet a requirement from the US Army Air Service for an aircraft suitable for an attempt at the first flight around the world. The Douglas Aircraft Company responded w/a modified variant of their DT torpedo bomber, the DWC. Fabric sample shows wear w/.25" spot of surface off but display is Exc. as framed. Second is unframed print for "Curtiss NC-4," a Curtiss NC flying boat manufactured by Curtiss Aeroplane and Motor Company. In May, 1919, the NC-4 became the first aircraft to fly across the Atlantic Ocean, starting in New York State and making the crossing as far as Lisbon, Portugal, in 19 days. This was not a non-stop flight and included time for stops for repairs and crew rest. Its flight from the Azores to Lisbon completed the first transatlantic flight between North America and Europe, and two more flights from Lisbon to northwestern Spain to Plymouth, England, completed the first flight between North America and Great Britain. Fabric sample shows wear to varnish coating and is slightly loose at top. VF overall. Historic aviation artifacts.
