Item Description
First is 5/8" with W&H paper. Front shows red schoolhouse flying American flag from the chimney. Reads "Public School Defence League Of Michigan." This button is from 1924 when the group named on this button sponsored a ballot initiative to require attendance at public school and outlaw private ones, that is those sponsored by the Catholic church. This ballot initiative was endorsed by the then increasingly popular Klan. Second item, from roughly the same time period, is a 1.25" showing large flowing American flag surrounded by text "100% American/The Flag I Love." This was a popular Klan theme in the mid 1920s promoted by Imperial Wizard Hiram W. Evans. Evans believed "True Americanism" excluded African-Americans, Catholics, Jews, and "Hordes Of Inferior Immigrants..." Button has a 1/16" nick on the extreme right edge but the button is otherwise Mint.
