Item Description
8.25x10.5" with 32 pages including covers. Cover is dated as "May-June-July 1966/Special 32 Page Issue" and features the Black Panther logo on the front. Publication editor was Doug Jenness and it was published in NYC. The article is titled "The Black Panther Party: A Report From Lowndes County" by John Benson. The four page article describes the early 1966 origins and reasons for the formation of the "Lowndes County Freedom Organization-Known As The Black Panther Party Because Of Its Symbol..." Article notes that "Negroes Of Lowndes County" comprised 81% of the population but not a single Negro had been registered to vote before March of 1965. The article covers the formation of the party in detail with references to Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, Stokely Carmicheal, Dr. Martin Luther King, SNCC, and Southern Christian Leadership Conference. Last page of the article includes block of text reading "The Berkeley YSA Is Helping To Support The Black Panther Party By Distributing Buttons With The Black Panther Symbol On A Blue Background" followed by an address in Albany, California and giving the information "Buttons Are Thirty Cents." With this publication one of these 1.5" buttons comes along and this has curl text naming San Francisco maker Star Engraving Co. Button is NM and displays Mint. Publication has a little brown tone along the front cover right edge and a couple of small brown or black stains on the rear cover. See following lot with the rare button issued by the Alabama Panthers.
