Item Description
First is 1.75" with back paper by Los Angeles maker Achievement Badge & Trophy Co. Button has 1/16" cut on bottom edge showing as a white mark but a small gray mark on the inner most white circle was dirt now removed. Button reads "Anthony Wilkins/Murdered By The L.A.P.D./Stop Police Killings!" Our thanks to APIC member and cause specialist John O'Brien for the following information. Wilkins was a black activist escorting a community youth group to an event at the Hollywood Bowl. He was killed by the police in a scuffle who claimed the group was trying to gate crash; however they had tickets for the concert. This event took place c.1970. Second item relates to events which began in Harlem in April, 1964. The event came to be known as the "Little Fruit Stand Riot." It ended in a death and the arrest of six young men who came to be known as the Harlem Six who's trial began March, 1965. After many legal issues and trials which involved attorney William Kunstler all the young men were released but only after spending eight years in prison. This button is Mint with the exception of a few scattered dark tan oxidation dots on the reverse. Scarce civil rights buttons.
