Item Description
Each is 1" with the first having union bug on curl and back stamp and second naming maker in San Francisco Star Engraving Co. First button has initials of the group Free Speech Movement and includes "Free Speech" as a slogan. Second reads "Free Student Union." These mid-1960s buttons were sparked by events that began October 1, 1964 when Berkeley campus police attempted to shut down a table supporting the civil rights group Congress Of Racial Equality. The protest that followed made Mario Savio a prominent leader of the newly formed Free Speech Movement. The object was to gain political rights on the University Of California campus. The second button was a successor to FSM and was a broad student organization modeled on a labor union. Historic buttons from the early days of what became a tumultuous decade. Both are NM displaying Mint.
