Item Description
"Tarzan Of The Apes" was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first in a series of books about the title character Tarzan. First published in the pulp magazine "All-Story Magazine" in Oct., 1912, the first book edition was published in 1914. This is first state of the first edition, 5x7.5" hardcover bound in maroon cloth. Published on June 6, 1914 by A.C. McClurg. There are three states of the first edition, all three have the publisher's name printed on the spine and on the title page. The first and second state books each weigh about 1.25 lbs. due to using a heavier stock paper. "W.F. Hall Printing Co. Chicago" is printed in Old English font on the copyright page, whereas the third state uses the Gothic type-face. Another difference between the first and second state is that there is an acorn symbol printed on the spine above A.C. McClurg's name on the second state. This first state, first edition does not feature acorn symbol. Spine has slight fade and covers have minor corner tip wear w/some scattered edge wear. Pages are clean and tight w/some lt. margin aging. VF overall. A.C. McClurg printed a total of 10,000 first edition copies of "Tarzan Of The Apes," w/approximations of 5,000 of the first state printing. A classic book and a must for any Tarzan collector.
