9.75x25.5" illustrated cardboard display card contains 25" long plastic "Rapid Fire Rifle" and 7x8.5" soft rubber Ape mask by Mattel, set No. 7329. 1970s though marked 1967. While display card features great images of Apes using gun in this set (differing from art used on box of previous item #2540), the gun was originally issued for another property that was quickly repurposed to cash in on the popularity of "Planet Of The Apes." However, despite the movie's popularity, these sets did not sell well and were quickly pulled from shelves. Gun has "Planet Of The Apes" illustrated decal on stock (aged w/two loose edges) and features simulated revolving bullet chamber and raised "Rapid Fire" and "Mattel" logo above bullet chamber. Gun produces loud pop noise when trigger is pulled. Works. Exc. Mask has been removed from card, but original tabs remain affixed to card and mask shows little to no wear, forehead slightly out of shape as stored over the years. VF. Card has aging and scattered edge/corner tip wear w/wear to die-cut areas for holding rifle and scattered creasing. Fine/VF. Both gun and mask are rare and set is extremely rare in original box. Among the rarest and most sought after Planet of the Apes items, our last example sold for $1,683.
