Item Description
Thin art board has 6.5x9.5” India ink image area w/befuddled man in bed clothes w/hands in air. Dictator Juan Peron is on his left and Francisco Franco is on his right. A politician type titled “Little Hitler’s” is on bedspread and a hooded klansman sits atop bedpost. Hand inked caption at bottom reads “They May Not Smell Good, But They Say They Hate Communism.” Upper right is autographed in ink “To Spruille Braden From An admirer- Bill Mauldin." Spruille was an American diplomat, lobbyist, and was on the Council of Foreign Relations. Art is dated “11-28” at lower left. Complete w/applied United Feature Syndicate copyright label. Exc. Bill Mauldin (1921-2003) became famous in WWII for his “Willie and Joe” cartoons of average soldiers. He went on to a lifelong career as a political cartoonist, winning two Pulitzer prizes, the Army Legion of Merit, and the NCS Reuben along the way. His single most famous cartoon depicted Lincoln weeping at the Lincoln Memorial when President Kennedy was killed in 1963. A superb well drawn example. From the Schechter Family collection.
