Item Description
c. 1940s. Wood frame has archival mat containing India ink and watercolor art w/14.25x15.25” image area. Scene has nervous fireman gripping pole w/ heavyset fireman telling him “No, Finnegan….For Up, We Got Stairs”. A happy dog w/bandaged tail watches nearby. Upper right is signed in ink “Jay Irving.” Caption is hand lettered on mat. Bright and Exc. Jay Irving (1900-1970) worked at “Collier’s” weekly magazine 1932-1945 creating “Collier’s Cops”, and is best known for the “Pottsy “ comic strip which appeared 1955-1970. He was a founding member of the NCS, and his son is noted writer Clifford Irving. Wonderful example, ready for display. From the Schechter Family collection.
