Item Description
This very striking and rare piece is 4.25” tall. It is composed of a pleated fabric rosette 2.25” in diameter. Below are three fabric streamers which have been restored and which are largely intact. Each thin silk streamer has been backed by a slightly stiffer white fabric. One streamer has a star pattern while the other two read “Constitution” and “Union.” Mounted at the center of the rosette, in a frame different than what is shown in Sullivan, is a thin circular brass frame with an inner circle of what appears to be glass executed in panels of blue, red and white all surrounding Mint ferrotype portrait of Washington at the center. The ferrotype is held to the rosette by a pair of small metal tabs seen on the reverse which includes tiny traces of an old label but only the word “New” is still present. There is a tiny and very faint 3/32” hairline on the lower segment of the white glass but that is the only flaw on this most unusual and very early use of color to adorn an 1860 ferrotype badge. Rare and the only example known to us.
