Item Description
1-1/16” in white metal. DeWitt #1884-11. We will quote the description of famous collector Dr. P. B. Wright as described in the issue of the Numismatist for Nov. 1902: “The animal on the obverse typified Cleveland, the rotund ex-Mayor of Buffalo. The reverse portrays a male Harpy with whiskers perched upon a snake which is curved upward and inscribed United South. The face of the Harpy is intended to represent James G. Blaine. The designer has given us a male Harpy. Virgil and Hesoid have given us only females. In Greek mythology Harpy’s were vultures with the head and breasts of a woman. They were very fierce and loathsome, living in an atmosphere of filth and stench and contaminating everything which they touched.” The text on the bison side reads “Beef Takes The Presidential Chair March 4, 1885/R.R.R. Did It.” The text on the Harpy side reads “I Say Nothing Because/I Have Nothing To Say” with panels of text below “Renegade Press/Free Traders/Dependents.” Don & Mildred Wright Collection. Scarce and NM.
