Thin art board has 14x16.25” India ink image area w/invading soldiers pillaging village w/close up scene of soldier w/bayoneted rifle dragging terrified woman from doorway as baby’s body lies nearby. Signed in ink “Gaar Williams” at lower left. Bottom margin has pencil caption “The Loss Of Chivalry Stands For The Loss Of Conscience- For Moral Degradation-“. Referred to as “The Hoosier Cartoonist”, Williams (1880-1935) worked extensively for “The Indianapolis News” followed by “The Chicago Tribune”. A superb and dramatic example of his skill w/pen & ink.
