Item Description
Thin art board has 10.5x13” India ink and gouache image area. Striking scene has Von Hindenburg as bulldog wearing helmet having burst through “Frontier” fence about to attack as hand representing Uncle Sam holds cocked pistol titled “U.S. Army”. Area between them is titled “France”. Blank bottom margin has caption “Back Off!” hand lettered in pencil. Reverse side has ink stamp date “Used Aug 17 1918”, likely published in “Puck” or “Judge” cartoon magazines. Blank margins have minor wear, image area will frame to Exc. appearance. Eugene Zimmerman (1862-1935) had some 12,000 cartoons published in his lifetime, founded the American Association of Cartoonists and Caricaturists, and a correspondence school for cartoonists. An outstanding example of his pen and brush work. From the Schechter Family Collection.
